Vårby is great but does take ~30 minutes to get into Stockholm city from. The most crime ridden parts of Stockholm are Norrmalm and Södermalm, central parts of the city. But I'd wager they're probably safer than most other European cities of similar size. If you get a good price in a suburb - go for it!
